Acclaimed band Lowrider are are back, and set to unveil their third studio album ‘Black Stones’ this Saturday at The Depot. Ahead of the much anticipated release, Soph and Seb spoke to drummer Paul about the album and how their sound has and continues to evolve.

Last time Adelaide lads, The Bakers Digest, were in the Radio Adelaide studio they had just released their single ‘Haunt Me’.  Now almost 6 months later they are back, this time with an EP.

Taylor and Tom joined Soph and Seb in the studio to talk the launch of their EP ‘Thinly Veiled’ at the Crown and Anchor this Saturday.

Steph Crase AKA Summer Flake dropped in on Danni and Walter to have a chat about her most recent EP Where Do I Go?, and to tell us about her upcoming shows in New Zealand and at the South by South West showcase in America.  She also brought in her guitar and played a couple of tracks.

Cameron Smith from Brisbane instrumental band Ghost Notes is no stranger to Adelaide, which is apparently his most frequented tour destination across many bands and projects. Danni and Walter spoke to him about his favourite venues, running live venues and studios in Brisbane and re-releasing Ghost Notes’ 2011 debut album as a vinyl double LP.

After years of rocking out with Killing Heidi and keeping it in the family with The Verses, Australian songstress Ella Hooper has released her first solo project ‘In Tongues’.

Seb and Sophie caught up with Ella to chat about her independent release, the meaning behind her new single ‘Low High’ and how the music scene has changed since her career began.

Brooklyn low-fidelity folk-y psych band Woods tore up the Format basement last Thursday night. Seb and Sophie spoke to them on Tuesday about Sugar Mountain Festival, changing lineups, and the challenges of manipulating tape on tour.

After the success of Sydney duo The Presets’ 2008 release Apocalypso, it would’ve been easy to keep the ball rolling while on such a high. But amidst the unexpected rise to fame came another challenge for both Julian Hamilton and Kim Moyes: parenthood. Both decided it was best to step away from the limelight and spend time with their new families, and this decision certainly inspired a number of ideas that formed third album Pacifica. The Range spoke to drummer Moyes from Canberra, where the group were preparing for an Australia Day concert, and found out about some of the more sinister yet optimistic themes gathered in Pacifica, and how these might translate to the band’s new live show.

The Presets play at HQ on Tuesday February 5, with tickets still available.

Stage 4 of the 15^th Tour Down Under had an unconventional grass start this morning at Modbury with the race winding through the Adelaide Hills and word famous Barossa Valley wine region. Right from the start, current World Champion Philippe Gilbert of BMC made a breakaway with young Australian rider Damian Howson (UniSA ) joining the world champ. The breakaway lasted for 118km of the 126.5km stage before being swallowed up by the peloton. This was always going to happen, with the peloton controlling the gap, with it only getting out to 3-4 minutes.

Damian Howson took the King of the Mountain for Stage 4, with Gilbert taking second and Jack Bobridge claiming third, adding a few more precious points to his KOM lead.

The two sprint’s were taken by Gilbert (BMC), Howson (UniSA) and Brown (Blanco), Brown denying Geraint Thomas (SKY) any time bonuses to add to his lead. Thomas still holds onto the Ochre Jersey with a 5 second lead over Stage 3 winner Tom Slagter, with Movistar rider Javier Moreno in third only a second behind Slagter.

With many of the big names out of contention for general classification, there may be a few surprises in tomorrow’s Willunga and McLaren Vale stage, especially on the Willunga Hill finish.

Expect to see Tiago Machado in contention for Stage 5, as well as many of the Australian riders, who will be out for a win on Australia Day.

Stage three of the 15^th Tour Down Under started in the leafy suburb of Unley in front of a massive crowd. The race neutral zone was from Unley to the Toll Gate on the South Eastern Freeway. It was only 2.5km from when the flag dropped to start racing to the King of the Mountain at Eagle on the hill, with local boy Jack Bobridge (Blanco) taking it out, his local knowledge coming into play, followed by Daryl Impey (Orica GreenEDGE) and Garikoitz Bravo (Euskaltel Euskadi).

Soon after reaching the challenging and technical Stirling circuit, of which there were to be 6 laps this year, Simon Clarke (Orica GreenEDGE) and Will Clarke (Agro Shimano) made a break away that lasted until half way through lap five when they were caught by a group of six riders crossing the gap. They rode together for another 20km, until Will Clarke, who had been part of the initial breakaway earlier in the day, and another ride fell off leaving 6 riders left, including Simon Clarke and Daryl Impey. However the breakaway soon split, losing the momentum and were swallowed by the peloton.

Australian Cam Worth (Cannondale) made an attempt at a breakaway late in the stage, however his effort did not last long. Another breakaway came from Tiago Machado (Radioshack Trek) at 4km to go. The climber and time trial specialist had a chance to take the stage, but went to early, burning out with 1km to go.

The move came from Australian David Tanner (Blanco) leading out Tom Jelte Slagter (Blanco). Slagter, wearing the Cycle Instead Young Riders Jersey caught out big guns Matty Goss (Orica GreenEDGE) and reigning world champion Philippe Gilbert (BMC) with a brilliant sprint with 400m to go at the two veteran missed this jump and struggled to catch the young Slagter, taking his first professional stage win.

Stage Two of the 15^th Tour Down Under from Mt Barker to Rostrevor was a real game changer for the race.

The shortest stage in the history of the Tour Down Under saw a breakaway early on from Will Clarke (ARG), Calvin Watson (UNISA), Chris Juul Jensen (TST) and Guillaume Bonnafond (AG2R).

Clarke took out both the first and second intermediate sprits, before the breakaway was swallowed up by a charging peloton readying their key riders for the challenge of Corkscrew Road. Geraint Thomas (Sky) broke away from the peloton and charge up the Corkscrew with Javier Moreno (MOV), Ben Hermans (RSH) and Tom-Jelte Slagter (BLA) chasing hard. Thomas maintained his gap to claim King of the Mountain honours for the stage.

On the decent into Rostrevor there was an horrific pile up, with between 40 and 50 riders crashing into one another on a tight corner at speeds between 60 and 65km/h. There were plenty of graze’s and a few broken bones, with possibly three hospitalisations from the accident.

This threw the field and has destroyed the chances of many of the hot favorites who were in the middle of the peloton. This will seriously change the attitude of racing for some teams, as their key riders are well and truly out of General Classification contention, up to 2 and a half minutes down.

Stage one from Prospect through the Adelaide Hills to Lobethal was a great opening to the 15^th Adelaide Tour Down Under. Right from the start, 20 year-old Queenslander Jordan Kirby, who was recently crowned under-23 national road title, and is riding for the UniSA Australia, made an audacious breakaway, gaining a seven minute lead over the peloton.  Kirby, known for his time trialling abilities, gained top points in the King of the Mountain Category charging up Checker Hill the Category 2 Skoda King of the Mountain climb at just 41.9km in for the day.

The young rider, who has recently been signed to a European team, rode solo for the first 100km of the 135km stage before being caught by Frenchman Jerome Pineau of Omega Pharma – Quickstep.

But the spoils for the day went yet again to Andre “The Giant” Greipel, the fastest sprinter in this years field, took it out again on the line with time to spare after his Lotto-Belisol team worked to get him prime position into the final sprint to the line.

On the show, we wrapped up the results from the second women’s criterium held on the tight Prospect Road circuit. This time Joanne Hogan, who rides for Women’s Spanish cycling team – Bizkaia – Durango when not at home in Australia, took out maximum points from Kimberley Wells who leads the series so far, and Sarah Roy third making a marked improvement from her 7^th placing at the Rymill Park circuit on Sunday.

Chris spoke with Matt Goss from Orica-Greenedge before the race about his expectations for this year’s Tour Down Under. He also caught up with Matty Lloyd, the only Australian in the otherwise all Italian Lampre team and USA native Tyler Farrar. If you’ve not heard of local group SuperCaine, it’s probably because they are about as fresh as a band can get. Whilst the project has only been up and running for a couple of months, they are in the finishing stages of recording and already looking towards a launch. The whirlwind group of established Adelaide musicians dropped in for a chat with Seb and Sophie, giving us a sneak peak of what to expect from the lads in the coming months.

After almost 2 years, the young and incredibly talented Bearded Gypsy Band are set to release a live album this Thursday at The Gov. The band joined Seb and Sophie in the studio to talk about the ‘Live at The Wheaty’ release and how they juggle an ever increasing number of shows with their uni studies.

The Peoples Choice Classic kicked of the festival of cycling in Adelaide with a brilliant show at the East End street circuit. The 15th tour down under rolled into action with the Women’s criterion which was in a 45 minute plus two lap’s format. With the women’s track training camp in Adelaide this week, there was some great racing to warm up the 108,000 strong crowd!

The main race was a spectacle right from the start, with Radioshack Leopard Trek rider Jens Voigt and UniSA local boy Zak Dempster leading out on a massive break away which got out to over a minute at one stage. It sure got the crowds pumped for the first UCI Pro Tour race of the season!

In the end, the peloton found some pace and wound the pair back in with 8 laps to go. You could see Lotto-Belesol, Orica-Greenedge and Radioshack Leopard Trek were planning big moves, but it was “The Giant”, Andre Greipel that took it out on the line from Matt Goss and team mate Greg Henderson.

On the show we spoke to Orica GreenEdge rider Simon Clarke about the race and the year ahead, Ashlee Ankudinoff and Isabella King from the women’s race, and to lots of enthralled spectators enjoying the perfect Adelaide weather for the People’s Choice Classic.

Danish trio Efterklang have been kicking about since the turn of the millennium, and as lead singer Caspar Clausen told The Range, the band has begun thinking about how things have changed in music circles 12 years down the track. For their 4th album, Piramida, the band stepped right out of their comfort zone, and found a whole gamut of new sounds in places they may never have dreamed of visiting, as you will find out. Sam began the interview by cheekily asking Caspar if he was jealous of our seasonally-warm weather. You can stream the interview below.

Danni and Walter had a chat to Nic from Melbourne band No Zu about their up coming show in Adelaide as part of the Lost City festival (Feb 1-3). Nic also told us that the band will be recording something new in 2013!

Sydney 4 piece, Sticky Fingers, have been all over the airwaves since the release of their single ‘Caress Your Soul’. Their musical talent and down to earth approach to band life is the reason their following is and continues to grow so strong.

The band will be bringing their psychedelic, reggae sound to Adelaide this Friday for their ‘Clouds and Cream’ tour. Ahead of the show Seb and Sophie caught up with bassist and vocalist, Paddy Fingers, to talk about the tour so far and how these 4 shaggy haired Sydney boys came to be.
